Shooting
Shooting is one of the most important skills in basketball as it directly affects the score of the game. A team that shoots good has a higher chance of winning the game. There are different types of shots in basketball like jump shot, free throw, hook shot, fadeaway jumper, and three-point shot. Each type of shot has its own technique and purpose. Learning how to shoot effectively requires practice, proper shooting form, and knowing and understanding shooting mechanics like hold your follow-through, keep your elbow tucked when shooting, use your legs while shooting to generate more power etc. Good shooters also have strong mental focus and confidence when taking shots during games. If you are not confident enough in your shot, it will not go in no matter how long you have practiced it and how good is your shooting form. Now, let's cover basic types of shooting moves.
Jump Shot
The jump shot is a very common type of shot in basketball. Jumpshot is usually taken in midrange spots. For jumpshot you have to jump high and release the ball at the peak of the jump. This shot works well when you are trying to shoot over defenders. For being able to shoot proper jumpshots, it requires you to have good footwork, proper hand placement and a good follow through.
Free throws
Free throw is a shot you shoot from the line without anyone defending you. Even though every free throw is worth only a point, it can decide close games and help teams build momentum. You can have one, two or even three chances to score. It all depends on where you get fouled and if you make your shot when you get fouled.
Hook Shot
The hook shot is a one-handed shot where the player extends their arm in a sweeping motion to release the ball. Hook shot is mostly used inside the paint to score against taller defenders.
Fadeaway Jumper
A fadeaway jumper is when a player jumps backwards while shooting to create space between them and a defender. By moving away from the defender you make it more difficult for the defender to block your shot. Fadeaway jumper is useful when the defender is very close. Perfecting this shot requires lots of practice as it is requires good balance and good control.
Three-Point Shot
The three-point shot is taken from beyond the three-point line, which is farther from the basket than regular shots. In order to shoot a good three pointer, you have to have good strength, good accuracy and good shooting mechanics.
