Understanding the rules of basketball is important as it helps beginners underatand and enjoy the game of basketball. Not only that but rules also make sure you play safe and a fair game of basketball. Here are some basic rules that you will definitely need when playing basketball.

Double dribble

Double dribble is when a player dribbles the ball catches it and dribbles it again. Double dribble is also when someone dribbles the ball with two hands instead of one. If one of these situations happen during game, the ball is awarded to the other team.

Travelling

Travelling is when you take more than 2 steps without dribbling the ball. Raising your pivot foot is also travelling. Pivot foot is the foot that should be stayed on the ground and not be moved when you picked up your dribble. When travelling occurs in a game the opponent team gets the ball.

Foul

Fouling in basketball is when you make an illegal physical contact like hit and push the other player. If the player gets fouled when taking a shot, they can get to the free throw line and take 2 or 3 free throws. It depends where you foul the player. If they are fouled inside the 3 point line that they will shoot 2 free throws. If they are fouled when shooting a 3 pointer, they will shoot 3 free throws. If the player was fouled whil shooting and makes the basket, they count the basket and award them with 1 free throw. If the player is not fouled when shooting then they start the ball from baseline or sideline.

Five second violation

Five second violation is when a player holds the ball for more than five seconds without dribbling, shooting or passing the ball. Five second rule is also when a team does not inbound the ball from baseline or sideline within five seconds. When this happens, the opposing team is gets the ball.

Eight second violation

Eight second violation is when a team fails to get the ball past their own halfcourt within eight seconds. When this happens the opponent team gets the ball.

Backcourt violation

Backcourt violation is when you step back to your own halfcourt after passing it. When this happens the opponent team gets the ball.

Shot clock violation

Shot clock violation is when you don't attempt a shot within 24 seconds after having possession of the ball. If this violation happens, the opponent team gets the ball.

Three second violation

Three second violation is when offensive player stays in the paint for three seconds without leaving the paint. But in American basketball this rule apllies to both offensive and defensive sides of basketball meaning you can't stay 3 seconds without leaving the paint both in defense and offense. If this violation occurs in game, the opponent team will get the ball.
